Food & Drink

At Steinbergdalshytta we don´t use prefab.

The food at Seinbergdalshytta is a separate chapter. Food is more than calories and stomach filling. It is community, taste experience and culture. That's why we set the long table for dinner, and you often get an insight into who is behind the dishes and where the ingredients come from. Sharing a meal together, even with strangers, makes for memorable experiences and strong bonds both with the people, the food and the place.

The geographical location of Steinbergdalshytta, midway between east and west, means that access to quality produce is top notch. Right outside our cabin are rich fishing lakes, herbs and berries. If you head east, you will come to Ostebygda Hol. Here they are experts in delicious cheeses, made from both goat's and cow's milk. A short drive to the west, we find Aurland by the Sognefjord, where skilled people grow vegetables and berries, and produce various world-class goat cheeses. Some of them with an unbroken centuries-old tradition. Here we also get our hands on exclusive kid goat meat, a partly forgotten ingredient that really deserves more attention.

With all this glory nearby, we supply Steinbergdalshytta with mountain trout, edible plants, berries and mushrooms and buy from local farmers. We bake our own sourdough bread, oat biscuits and crispbread. We brew our own beer and make soup and sour cream porridge from scratch. When we get so close to the produce and those who cultivate them, it creates a respect for the same people and an acknowledgment of the value of food. When you realize how much time and love is behind it, the meal on the plate in front of you takes on a new dimension, and throwing away food is something you avoid at all costs.

Sustainability may seem a worn-out and watered-down concept, because too many easily throw it around, or embellish themselves with it. But if we look at what it really means, it is highly relevant. To live and consume in such a way that we do not damage the environment, nature and the soil that gives us food and ultimately all resources we need to live, this is what we strive for at Steinbergdalshytta, - every day.
