WINTER STAY AT STEINBERGDALSHYTTA
A winter stay at Stainbergdalshytta is definitely a possibility, and at 1070 masl it is an exotic and different experience, however not as straight forward as in summer. The reason for this is first and foremost that accessability depends on the weather. With strong winds and snow the road will close, or only be open for convoys, and Steinbergdalshytta lies within the barriers. Under such conditions one can get lost on the 400 m stretch up from the main road.
Much of the winter season it’s just Ambra and myself here, and it goes without saying that I cannot keep 500 m2 at 20 degrees plus. It easily takes a couple of days to heat up the old log structure when the thermometer shows minus 17. Life here in winter is more secluded than in summer, and many tasks demand more time and effort. As a winter guest in Stemmerdalen you take part in the practical chores that comes with the season, such as shoveling snow and carrying fire wood. The bottom line: You are welcome to visit Steinbergdalshytta when winter is as its darkest, (which is a lot less dark than many other places I know), but check the forecast and order some days in advance. Pack your stuff in a backpack, and don’t make it heavier than you can can carry 400 m uphill from the main road. Complicated?? Oh yes! But it might just be worth it when you experience the silence, (alternatively the sound of the storm on the timber walls), resting in front of the fireplace, the starry sky, the light..
